Superintendent's Message

Nancy Sanders, SuperintendentWelcome to W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind. This school is comprised of the Elementary School for the Blind, the Secondary School for the Blind, as well as our Deafblind program. We currently have approximately 180 students in our Schools for the Blind, with an additional 37 students in our program for Deafblind. We are a close knit community – with both residential and school staff working together to help all students learn and succeed.

At W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind, we strive to live up to the vision that all students will have a sense of belonging in a safe and caring environment. Our purpose is to unlock the potential within our students by highlighting abilities and providing new challenges. Every year at graduation I feel honoured to hear the voices of our students sharing stories of school activities, work experiences and the support they have felt from staff, parents and from each other. (All this and a beautiful graduation meal prepared by our food services staff who come to know our individual students so well!) As superintendent I remain grateful for the many dedicated staff members at our school, and for the interest and support from the Brantford community at large.

In addition to our school, the W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind site also houses the Resource Services Library, which provides Braille and alternate print formats for students across Ontario. For more information on this service please go to rsl.psbnet.ca

Resource Services for District School Boards is also located at W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind in the historic Sardagar House on campus. Our consultants provide assessment and support services for students who are blind, low vision, visually impaired or require pre-braille literacy services.

W. Ross Macdonald School in partnership with Nipissing University, offers Additional Qualification courses in Blind Education, Part I, II and Specialist Level, so teachers are welcome to join us during our summer learning session!

Finally, our newly developed “Short Term Programs” hold promise of increased links with students, families and community services across Ontario.

There is always something happening at W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind. I am proud to be part of this exciting learning community!

Sincerely,

Dr. Nancy Sanders
