General InformationOntario students with vision impairments are referred by their local school boards for admission to the W. Ross Macdonald School for the Visually Impaired and Deafblind in Brantford. This provincial school is administered by the Provincial Schools Branch (PSB) of the Ontario Ministry of Education. With the employment of specialized teachers of the blind, low-vision, and deafblind, this provincial school provides a full range of programs and services — elementary and secondary education, resource services (including consultation to school boards), orientation and mobility training, early intervention assistance to the students and their families, partnership with other service providers, music education, and an extended core curriculum. Most students from across the province live in campus residences during the week, travelling in Sunday nights and leaving Fridays at noon. The largest collection of special format materials in Braille, large print, E-Text, CDs, and on audiotapes is housed in the school’s classrooms and library. The school has a full range of recreational programs and clubs, that include the Silver Otter swim team, cross-country, canoe club, outdoor education, wrestling, and a swim club that includes members from local high schools. The school is recognized internationally for educating blind, low-vision, and deafblind students as it is a Provincial Resource Centre.
