Learning Disability & Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Programs

Learning Disability/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (LD/ADHD) programs are intended for students with a diagnosis of severe learning disabilities and ADHD. The programs provide intensive interventions to prepare students for return to a school program in their home community within one year.

Program interventions include:

  • Individualized instruction in academic and social skills;
  • Frequent use of computers;
  • Low stimulus, structured environments;
  • Physical activities that promote pro-social and team values;
  • Support and group counseling programs that focus on understanding, accepting and coping with ADHD and learning disabilities;
  • Cognitive behaviour modification and cognitive behaviour therapy;
  • Ongoing psychiatric assessment and monitoring by a specialist in this area;
  • Effective medication control;
  • Parent education and support groups that focus on understanding and managing behaviour; and
  • A partnership with the home, the school board and the provincial demonstration school to facilitate the return of the student to an appropriate school placement, including teacher training in understanding and accommodating the needs of the ADHD student in the school setting;

This one year program is based on the following principles:

  • Students admitted to the programs are the most severe students with LD/ADHD in Ontario. They require a highly intensive and well resourced program.
  • It is more appropriate to provide intensive, one year programs than to provide longer term, less intensively resourced programs since the risk of students developing
    dependency on the programs is reduced.
  • One year, intensive programs provide for the most effective use of limited resources since more students can be served.

The mandate of these programs is to return students to their home boards at the end of one year (2 semesters). Service agreements will be signed by all parties shortly following admissions, and transition planning will be initiated during the first semester of the program.
