American Sign Language (ASL) Tutorial Program

ASL tutorials are provided to students who are identified as requiring ASL support in addition to the ASL Language class by:

  • the student’s ASL-Proficiency Assessment (ASL-PA) results
  • results from different ASL assessment tools focusing on different ASL linguistic skills
  • the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  • the Annual Review meeting

The ASL Language Teacher works in conjunction with the ASL Tutor in program planning and reporting. Different ASL assessments, as well as ASL-PA, are used to determine the appropriate tutorial program, which are mostly individual, for the students.

The ASL Tutor:

  • focuses on the features of the ASL-PA as well as other linguistic features based on other ASL assessment tools in the tutorials.
  • provides a variety of activities geared towards the emergence and development of ASL features specific to individual students.
  • models the use of the target ASL feature(s)
  • encourages student to demonstrate or practice the target ASL feature(s) through the use of manipulative materials
  • provides immediate feedback on the student’s use of target ASL feature(s)
  • strives for the end goal of increasing the students’ ASL literacy skills through hands-on activities as well as through awareness of the school environment

Assessment:

The students’ needs for continued ASL Tutorials are re-evaluated based on re-assessments of ASL assessment tools.
